8/31 - Regular Season Week 1
(Dryden Senior HS)
Good balance? That might be an understatement because the Tigers won with phenomenal balance.

Senior Tyler Spires led the ground game with 270 yards on 16 carries and four touchdowns - including scoring runs of 49, 74, and 41 yards. He scored three times in the first half and on the second play of the second half.

That's when freshman Jesse Manuel took over and amassed 190 yards on the ground on 18 carries with two touchdowns and a two-point conversion.

Tioga matched the game-time temperature by starting hot. Dryden dropped back to pass on the first play of the game and Ryan House picked it off.

On T.C.'s first offensive play Spires rumbled up the middle for 30 yards. He outdid himself on the next, showing some speed as he outran the defense for a 42-yard TD.

After the Tigers forced a Dryden punt, Tioga put together a 13-play drive of 80 yards. Spires capped the drive with a 9-yard run and T.C. led 12-0 after a quarter.

Dryden scored their only touchdown in the second quarter after the snap from center skipped across the ground and over punter Carter Jackson, who raced to the endzone and ran around under pressure before delivering a 32-yard punt. Then Eymel Deas ran three times in a row. On the final run of eight yards, Tiger defenders had Deas in their grasp, but appeared to let him go as they pushed him backward. Deas took advantage and scored.

Deas finished the game with 95 yards on 18 carries.

The celebration was short-lived. On Tioga's next play from scrimmage, Spires raced 74 yard for his third touchdown for an 18-6 halftime lead. Spires had 193 yards on 12 carries and three touchdowns at the half.

Spires picked up where he left off in the second half with a 49-yard TD run on the second of the second half.

The Tigers then looked Manuel who scored on a 5-yard run and ran in for the two-point conversion. On T.C.'s next possession, Manuel showed his speed with a 52-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth for the final tally of 40-6.

"It was the first game of the season and our legs were dead at the end of the half and allowed them to score,"Aiello said. "But we got off the ball in second half. This is what I expected from a young team."

If the ground and pound attack displayed at Haggerty Field is what Aiello expected from his young team, then pity their opponents next week. And that would be Newark Valley at Haggerty Field, under the Friday night lights.
